About us

Power for Democracies is an independent non-profit research initiative committed to protecting and strengthening liberal democracy around the world.

What we do

We identify highly effective civil society initiatives in the context of current and emerging threats to democracy, and we provide recommendations to donors for funding and support.

Our research team synthesises existing academic and field research on democracy. It commissions original research studies where there are gaps, and it develops systematic methodologies to identify and select the most relevant and effective civil society organisations and initiatives. Our goal is to ensure that finite resources are channelled into efforts that will yield the greatest impact for democratic progress.

Why we do it

We believe that civil society initiatives can have a powerful effect which benefits liberal democracies. Its institutions, values and principles, and checks and balances make democracy fair and just.

Through the power of individuals and their collective engagement, democracies maintain legitimacy, develop resilience, and evolve and innovate for the better.

Recognising the potential of civil society to effect change, Power for Democracies is dedicated to using evidence to identify the organisations and initiatives that are best placed to either strengthen liberal democracies or encourage their development.

Our values

At the heart of our work lies a commitment to liberal democracy. We are guided by the belief that liberal democracy is not only valuable in and of itself but that it is also the best system for securing global security, peace, individual rights, just governance, and collective well-being.

We are impact-led. We take meaningful action to help improve liberal democracy through methodically rigorous and relevant research and evaluation. We evaluate initiatives with a clear focus on identifying those that achieve the most impact. This allows us to offer strategic guidance to donors who want their contributions to be as effective as possible.

Our independence is fundamental. Backed by unconditional funding, we are free to follow the evidence wherever it leads us. This autonomy empowers us to explore democracy in its full complexity, without being beholden to political, ideological, or institutional interests.

We bring a global perspective while remaining down to earth and rooted in local realities. Our research aims to be comparative, inclusive, and adaptable - designed to reveal patterns across regions while also accounting for the unique political, cultural, and historical contexts in which challenges for liberal democracy take shape.

We actively engage with local voices to ensure that our analysis is grounded and relevant. At every stage, we seek to recognise and thoughtfully account for our own biases.

We strive for open communication, making our reasoning transparent and our assumptions open to critique. We aspire to embody the values of intellectual humility, mutual learning, and accountability - qualities we see as essential for liberal democracy to flourish.
